Sustainable & Organic
Being “organic” and using products that use “sustainable” agricultural practices is something that just makes sense. We live and market in one of the greatest agricultural regions in the world. SYSCO continues in our efforts to offer products that come from suppliers that take care of the land being used and the workers involved in the growing of the products you use. Supporting the agriculture communities that support these activities is in the best interest of all of us. What does all of this mean?
Sustainable - A system and philosophy that consists of producing food in a way that protects natural resources, safeguards the helath and well being of farmers and consumers, and supports and enhances rural communities
Organic - The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is responsible for managing the National Organic Program, which was implemented in October 2002. Organic farming avoids the use of most artificial inputs, like synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and bans the use of animal byproducts, antibiotics and sewage sludge among other practices. Any food product (except fish) using the word organic must be certified as such by an official USDA accredited certifier.
Certified - A guarantee by the producer as having met certain requirements to ensure their products are following the principle of sustainable agriculture. We carry or can obtain products that are either certified organic or Food Alliance certified, (a third-party organization that upholds sustainable agriculture).
Socially Responsible - The principle that companies should contribute to the welfare of society and not be solely devoted to maximizing profits.
Safe - We are committed to providing safe products to our customers. To ensure that our customers are being provided the highest quality of products, we require each of our suppliers to sign a Hold Harmless agreement, which states that they are responsible for integrity of their product.
Locally Grown - SYSCO Sacramento goes to great lengths to support farmers and processors that conduct their business right here where we live. We want to help reduce food miles by purchasing these products from local suppliers and that helps promote freshness and sustainability.
